Our mission

On April 22nd, 2017, Earth Day, we launched a petition to ask France to ban plastic straws.

Plastic straws pollute our oceans and our health. Bas Les Pailles is a non-governmental organization that aims to raise awareness on the environmental effects of plastic straw use. We organize events, screenings and information campaigns in various French cities and on social media (#BasLesPailles). We participate in the global conversation on plastic straw pollution and teamed up with international movements such as The Lonely Whale (US), Straw Wars (UK) and Saving the World One Straw at a Time (Bali).

By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. As movements arise around the globe to refuse the plastic straws, only a global mobilization could have a real impact on our oceans’ future.

In our soda or our cocktail, the plastic straw is more of an old habit than a necessity. In the US alone 500 million of plastic straws are used everyday and in France 8.8 million straws are disposed of everyday in the fast food industry.

Single use plastic straws end up in landfill and never disappear. Their small size makes them difficult to recycle. Straws are part of the 8 million tons of plastic dumped in the ocean every year. They float along, forming the Great Ocean Garbage Patch.

Straws also end up on beaches and in our oceans where they can harm marine life that mistake them for food. And it all comes back to us: eaten by marine animals, the plastic ends up… in our plates.

The video of two scientists removing a plastic straw from a sea turtle’s nose went viral and carries a very important message: we need to stop this and it is not too late to do so!
By simply changing our habits we can prevent single-use plastic from polluting our oceans. Act now: remember to say “no straw please” when ordering your drink. And if you are really fond of straws, there are other type of straws that do exactly the same job: bamboo, stainless steel, paper or glass straws are already available on the market. Ask local businesses to switch to these options, and let us know about your wins on social media.
